Stains on Marble: What to Do? 2019-11-08

Marble, traditionally viewed as a sign of luxury, is one of the most elegant materials to use in your interior design. Marble flooring, kitchen and bath countertops, whole slab walls, coffee tables, decor accessories, —  no matter what you choose, you won’t regret it. Unfortunately, along with the advantages such as timeless beauty and durability, go the downsides. Marble is a porous material, which means that the surface can be stained much easier than other natural stone surfaces. In this article Xiamen Aofei Building Materials experts will share the best tips on how to remove different types of stains on marble tiles, counters, and more!

Spills  on Marble

Remove any spills on the natural stone immediately. The longer you wait, the higher the chance is that the stain may become permanent. Wiping the marble surface with a soft cloth right after the spill happened will help you avoid the stain at all.

If you did not have a chance to take action immediately or simply removing the liquid didn’t help, do not worry! We’ve got some solutions for you. But first, we have to know what kind of stain it is.

3 THE MOST COMMON STAINS ON MARBLE

  • Stains from water
  • Stains from organics
  • Stains from oils

Stains from Water

It may sound surprising, but leaving a glass of water on a marble countertop for too long, or not wiping the water from the sink for a while may leave a stain on your marble surface.

WHAT TO DO?

Fortunately, water stains are relatively easy to remove from marble. Use a regular cleaner for marble surfaces or a grade 0000 steel wool.

Stains from organics

One of the most common stains we encounter when it comes to using marble for your project. Stains from a morning coffee, cups with tea or any other household substances.

WHAT TO DO?

These stains can be removed with a poultice with 6% of hydrogen peroxide. You can buy it or even make it yourself. However, as it contains hydrogen peroxide, be careful when you remove stains from dark-colored marble as it may lighten it.

Stains from Oils

Light brown or even yellowish in color, oily stains are caused by grease, butter, cooking oils, grease — which may damage your marble kitchen countertops and kitchen flooring tiles; hand and face lotions also make oily stains and may damage your bathroom marble countertop or a side table.

WHAT TO DO?

A poultice with a combination that includes certain types of mineral spirits will save the marble surface in your house, hotel, or a restaurant from oil-based stains.
